The Making of Rainbow Cupcakes (How to)

So I was asked about my Rainbow Cupcakes. I'm not the world's best cook...not even close. Even the cupcakes were kind of unedible, merely for the fact I think the butter I used was kind of stale and there was so much food dye in the cupcake that you could taste it. But here is the tutorial to make the pretty cupcakes based on my experience (not all of of the photos are up to the standard I like them to be before uploading them because I hadn't staged them properly as I didn't intend on posting them but here they are).

NOTE: This is only a tutorial based on my experience of making marblized rainbow cupcake, there's also the straight layered cupcake that you can make.

1. I was a little too impatient to make the cupcakes from scratch so I used a packet of Cupcake mix, the one I used was a Harry Potter themed one.

2. First add cupcake cups into a cupcake pan. Preheat oven to about 180 degrees Celsius (CHECK your packet or online for a specific temperature more suited to your oven)

3. Once I added the ingredients the cake mix required I put the cake batter in several smaller bowls.

I used the Queen Food Colouring range: Red, Blue, Yellow, Green were all available.

Then I added a small amount of red to one of the bowls of cake batter which made orange.

I wanted to make purple as well so I added red then some blue but then I added a little more blue and it became navy...

3. Once the batter is coloured get a spoon and drizzle it into the cupcake cups. Layer the colours, this is probably the most time consuming part of the process.

4. Put the tray into the oven, it was about 180 degrees Celsius, it takes about 10-15 minutes depending on the oven.

DON'T leave them unattended they can burn in mere minutes.

To test if they are ready test one by inserting a fork and if it comes out clean it should be ready.

5. While the cupcakes are baking make the icing. I used the packet icing sugar, you have to add like butter, vanilla essence and some milk.

6. Take the tray out and leave the cupcakes in the tray for about five minutes then remove them and leave them on a wire rack to cool. You can then put in your second batch.

7. Wait until the cupcakes have cooled before you add the icing otherwise it seems to melt and slide off the cupcake.

Basically, I was inspired by the rainbow marble type design of cupcakes that I have seen here on deviantart and wanted to try my own.

Here's some of the cakes/cupcakes which inspired me please click on the links to go to the original deviant. They're all brilliant works of cake art :D
